Acclaim is a national programme that seeks to increase the public recognition and appreciation of the work of leading scientists in the UK today. It is a collaboration between the Royal Society and the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University, with support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Medical Research Council and 4Learning. The aims of the programme are to:

  • support the teaching and learning of scientific enquiry;
  • promote the achievements of scientists and the excellence of their research;
  • raise the public profile of science and scientific research and to highlight its key role in the future health and prosperity of the nation;
  • illustrate the qualities of integrity, purpose and perseverance, curiosity and creativity, which lead to success in the search for new scientific knowledge;
  • enthuse and excite young people about science and raise their aspirations and commitment to science education.
