School Memories

How old were you when you became interested in science/engineering?
Science: 5 or 6
Engineering: 28 (I didn’t know what it was until then, even though I’d been practising for 6 years).

Are there any particular people who got you interested in engineering?
Tomorrow’s World
The designers/builders of Salisbury cathedral
The designers of the Triumph Spitfire engine (‘cos I rebuilt one once)
Meccano
My dad (who was an architect)

What are your memories of science at school?
Physics was great fun, especially the practicals
Chemistry was dusty and indechipherable hyroglyphics
Maths was like All-bran….almost indigestible but apparently good for you.

How do you think children learn science best?
By doing, by failing, by modifying…through projects.

What were your interests and hobbies as a teenager?
Playing guitar, riding bikes, sports of all kinds, painting.

What subjects did you study post-16 and why?
Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A level….we had to choose either arts or sciences and couldn’t mix them. I also went to Saturday morning Art School for about 3 years.
