Francesca Happé

Personal

What other talents /interests do you have?
I still like art, and draw, paint and make ceramic sculpture when I have time. I like swimming, skiing and windsurfing, the last two are recently-discovered pleasures. I've tried hang-gliding, which was wonderful, if scary!

How do you relax?
With friends.

Finally, which scientific discoveries would do you like to see take place this century?
I'd like to be able to draw a route map of the brain pathways involved in social understanding (knowing what someone else thinks and feels). I think that would tell us a lot about what is different in the brains of people with autism. I'm sure we'll find the genes that predispose for autism, but I hope along with that will come a better understanding of the real complexity of genetics, and how non-deterministic genes are. Just finding the genes that predispose for autism won't in itself help us understand autism, we also need a real appreciation of these individuals worth and human value.
