Paul Nurse

Personal

What other talents/interest do you have?
I’m still an amateur astronomer and amateur naturalist, and glider/aeroplane pilot. I like walking and theatre. I’m an avid reader on all sorts of things. I’m interested in archaeology and history. I’m not sure about any talents, but I have lots of interests!

How do you relax?
I walk and go jogging at the weekends, which I enjoy. I don’t have much time to relax though!

Which scientific discoveries would you like to see take place this century?
I’m very interested in how a living cell works. Knowing the sequence of genomes of living things is important. How do they all work together to produce this wonderful thing we know as life? How does a cell organise itself in space and time? I believe we have methods of investigating this as we go into the next century.
This is relevant to our understanding of disease, because disease is a consequence of defects occurring in cells. I look forward optimistically to new understanding and improvements in treatments to things like cancer.
