Stephen Sparks

Personal

What other talents/interests do you have?
Football, cricket, tennis, classical music, theatre, cooking.

How do you relax?
Gardening; playing and watching sport; reading; listening to music; walking in the country.

Finally, which scientific discoveries would you like to see take place this century?
By their nature, great discoveries are not possible to forecast. I expect that technology will play a huge role in the coming century in understanding volcanoes. Satellite observations will allow us to monitor volcanoes in detail. Faster and more powerful computers will allow us to model the very complex and violent flows in volcanoes. Most volcanoes are not really predictable, except under very special circumstances. In 100 years' time I am optimistic that most volcanic activity will be predictable.
